For many years, I've been involved with School on Wheels (www.schoolonwheels.com), an ESL program run by the Sisters of St. Joseph (CSJ). Colleen & I received a copy of the CSJ magazine imagineONE and both of us we were taken with a story about CSJs helping rebuild New Orleans after Katrina. The article talked about how the CSJs had participated in a "NunsBuild" in connection with the St. Bernard Project. It mentioned that another NunsBuild is scheduled for November 15 - 20 and it was open to sisters and anyone interested. Since Stephanie had participated in two separate post-Katrina rebuilding projects, we were both interested. We checked our calendars and found that we had the time available.
I emailed the sister quoted in the article to see if we could participate. She responded to come on down, so to speak, and offered to put us up in a cottage on her property. Shortly thereafter, I received a call from the NunsBuild Coordinator for the St. Bernard Project with information on how to sign up.
So that's how it all came about.
