The St. Bernard Project

The St. Bernard Project (SBP) is a nonprofit rebuilding organization whose mission is to create housing opportunities so that Hurricane Katrina survivors can return to their homes and communities  Since August 2006, SBP has worked to remove financial and physical barriers for families struggling to get home.   Using volunteer labor, SBP takes gutted houses and make the livable again in approximately 12 weeks with $20,000 of building materials.  In some cases, the homeowner provides the materials (such as dry wall, paint, flooring, etc.), however in most cases, SBP also raises funds to help families purchase the supplies they need.
Though SBP has completely rebuilt more than 260 homes, much work remains.  More than 10,000 families in greater New Orleans still reside in FEMA trailers or temporary disaster housing.  Nearly 75% of these families were homeowners prior to Hurricane Katrina.
