Vieux Carré

Sunday, November 14th (Evening)

After returning from our tour of the Museo, we decided to rest a bit and then visit the French Quarter.  Colleen had her heart set on eating at a place she remembered from a trip many years ago:  the Gumbo Shop (http://www.gumboshop.com/ The food was good, but she particularly remembered that it had killer bread.  We had no problem finding it and scored a table after only a ten-minute wait.  She went with a combo:  red beans & rice and Shrimp Creole.  I decided on the Chicken Gumbo with Andouille sausage.  We weren’t disappointed!  And, the bread was as good as she remembered.

We walked a bit in the Quarter.  Of course, we strolled down Bourbon Street. (It seemed like a loud bar band was blasting out of every second bar.)

For dessert we elected to go with

Café au Lait and Beignets at Café du Monde.  (http://www.cafedumonde.com/) It was one of those situations where it was good, but not as good as we remembered.  After brushing the powdered sugar off, we decided to call it a night.

We were taking I-10 back to St. Bernard when we were passed by a group of motorcylists on those low-slung “crotch rockets”.  I swear no more than a minute later, traffic came to an immediate stop.  Apparently, one or more of the motorcycles crashed.  People were getting out of their cars, going to see what happened.  Surprisingly, two police cars were already there.  We were able to get through on the shoulder, but couldn’t see much other than a jumble of motorcycles in the road.  But it was obvious that one or more motorcyclists were seriously injured.

We decided to try and find the local newsradio station to get details.  Believe it or not, we tuned in Chicago’s WBBM 780, clear as a bell.  We never did find out what happened though.
